How to choose IT support in Portsmouth
The questions that actually sort a local MSP from a national ticket queue — before you sign a monthly contract.
Searching “IT support Portsmouth” throws up national brands, one-person shops and a handful of genuine local MSPs. The websites all promise a fast helpdesk. The difference shows up on a Thursday afternoon when a server dies in Cosham, or when ransomware hits overnight and nobody who knows your network picks up.
This is the shortlist we would use if we were hiring IT support for a Portsmouth SME — the same questions we get asked before anyone signs. If you already know you want a managed package, go straight to managed IT support or IT support in Portsmouth.
1. Who actually answers the phone?
Ask to speak to an engineer before you buy. If the first call is a scripted first-line queue, that is the service you will get when email is down. Axis IT’s helpdesk is staffed by engineers, Monday to Friday 8:30am–6:00pm, with out-of-hours escalation for critical incidents. We aim to respond within the hour and resolve most tickets on first contact.
2. Can they be on-site in Portsmouth the same day?
Remote support fixes most tickets. Hardware, office moves, new switches and “the internet is dead and it is the cabinet” still need a person. Confirm they cover Portsmouth, Cosham, Southsea, Hilsea, Fareham and Gosport — not “the south of England” from a van two hours away. Same-day on-site for hardware failure should be normal, not a paid extra you discover in month four.
3. Is it managed IT, or break-fix with a retainer?
Break-fix is cheaper until the first outage. Managed IT support means monitoring, patching, Microsoft 365, backups and security are in the monthly fee, so problems are caught before staff notice. If a quote is only “hours in a bank”, you are still on break-fix. We wrote out the difference in benefits of managed IT support.
4. What is actually in the monthly fee?
Get it in writing. A Portsmouth IT support package should list helpdesk hours, 24/7 monitoring, patching, Microsoft 365 administration, endpoint protection, email security and backup — and say what happens when you need someone on-site. Watch for licences, Cyber Essentials, VoIP and connectivity sold as surprises. One invoice is the point of a managed contract.
5. Do they run Microsoft 365 properly?
Most Portsmouth firms already have Microsoft 365. The question is whether anyone has turned on MFA, closed shared passwords, and stopped ex-staff still having mailboxes. Ask who will own licences, Exchange, SharePoint, Teams and Intune. A provider that only “supports PCs” will leave the tenant as the weak link.
6. What happens when something security-shaped arrives?
Phishing and ransomware are the incidents that end relationships. You want XDR on endpoints, filtered email, MFA, tested backups, and a named person who has done this before. If you bid for public-sector or NHS supply-chain work, ask whether they can take you through Cyber Essentials. Our ransomware guide is the practical version of that conversation.
7. Will you still be able to leave?
Avoid contracts that lock admin passwords, domain control and Microsoft 365 in a way you cannot unwind. You should own the tenant, the data and the licences. A good Portsmouth MSP will document the estate as they go so another engineer could pick it up. That is also how you know they are not hiding the environment from you.
A simple way to compare two quotes
Ignore the glossy “strategic partner” paragraph. Score each firm on: local on-site cover, what is in the fee, who answers at 4pm, Microsoft 365 ownership, backup restore tests, and how you exit. The cheaper quote usually omitted monitoring, security or on-site visits. The more expensive one should be able to say why, in a sentence, without a slide deck.
